Live With The Nerds Don't Be One February 2000
- 2/29/00
Finally managed to take Cheryl to dinner for her birthday, it was
pretty fun catching up, she may even join the rest of the bay area
with email and web access soon.
Speaking of web access, it appears that the DNS server for my main
domain (as well as www.steves.org) has been having problems, people
have been getting intermittent access for most of the day --
hopefully it'll clear up, usually it's pretty solid, but we'll have
to see what happened later. Hmmm, I wonder if it's the vaunted Y2K
leap day problem?
Tech news, ordered more memory for my mac, hopefully it'll let
me do more spiffy graphical things, as well as prepare the machine
for video work. (look out Leilani ;)
- 2/28/00
Having not suffered enough punishment yesterday, I played in my
basketball league, unfortunately we lost a close one after leading
most of the way. It probably didn't help that I managed
to go 0 fer game shooting-wise.
On the tech side I finally managed to get my USB board up and running
on my Mac, that plus my new Photochute3 means I won't have to wait an
hour to download all of the pics from the CompactFlash card. Good
thing too, because of the parody gifs I've been building for
Steves.org I think I'm going
to be able to do some fun things for the bio entries, if you're
there, you have been warned, and if you're not, don't think you're
safe ;)
- 2/27/00
Managed to get out and play at the local NAGVA gym, it was pretty
fun, got play on a team with Sam & Will, and even practiced some
swing hitting cuz since they don't know me too well, they didn't
insist that I set ; but boy am I tired now.
I finally finished all of the ski pictures too, and now
they're accessible from the top level of my page -- I guess next up
is the bios pages or maybe redo all of that dating info I had
before, we'll see how I feel this week before I go skiing again.
- 2/26/00
Wow just about a whole week went by, been pretty busy. I'm now the
proud owner of 4 domain names (and webmaster for a 5th). We decided
that we'd better lock up the YeeFungToy .com and .net names to go
with the .org that I already hold for the group. For those of you who
don't know, Yee Fung Toy is the Yee Family Association name
and the Seattle Yees have been leading the effort to
join the cyber-age as well as hoping to reach out to the younger
folks and perhaps give them another place of expression.
I mentioned before that there are way too many Steves at work, well
now (on a lark) we have our own domain at www.steves.org. Right now
it's being hosted out of my server, but I expect (soon) a cooperative
effort to really spiff it up some. Someone at work bought the .org
name, after discovering that the owner of steves.com was trying to
sell it for $50K, will the squatting never cease ???.
Speaking of work, our stock (NTAP on NASDAQ) is surging again, it
actually closed at $200 this week so I sold some of my ESPP shares to
kill off another credit card. No one can believe this upswing and
there's still almost a month until the next split. At this rate,
early retirement is a good bet ;)
Daryl was in town Wed, so he, Candice & I hooked up for some
volleyball -- boy it's been a long time, my hands weren't too bad,
but they still need work, especially since we have a tourny coming
up.
Friday was the beer bust, and this time there was a chocolate treat
contest, my manager Glen, being the chocolate fiend that he is
usually finishes pretty high, and this year he retook his title as
top chocoloholic with some of his yummy truffles. It's a good thing
too, still on the chocolate buzz I helped Caroline (aka the
Lush One) move to her new apartment. It's
really close to some good resturants off of Geary, and her new
roommate is the Chef at
The Magic Flute I see much food in her future, hopefully I'll get
to snack on some too.
Finally finished labeling all of the raw pictures from my camera,
hopefully the Asia 2000 ski trip will be up by the end of the
weekend. I spent most of today vegging and editing pictures for the
display page, but I probably will finish it tomorrow, and then I
still have my taxes to do.
- 2/21/00
This was a veg day, only left my apt to fetch the mail, then watched
my tapes (a weeks worth) while working on my taxes -- almost got
everything done, quite the refund from Uncle Sam, but I still have to
pay Aunty CA. Only thing holding back completion is the totalling up
of all of my moving expenses when I came down here. While I was at it
I started collecting all of my info for the (possible) financial
advisor I met while skiing. Even better, Candice's firm does Estate
work so she's going to see if they have an Estate planner to help me,
all I'll need after that is a tax attorny and I'll be able to figure
out my real retirement plans.
It was recently pointed out to me that any of my digital camera
pictures can be shipped electronically to www.kodak.com and printed
(in multiple formats) for a reasonable fee. You even have choice of
sending the real file (after downloading it from my site) or just
referencing the URL for the file remotely. I guess to help facilitate
this I'd better put titles (or at least names) on the files so people
know what they're looking at.
- 2/20/00
Whole day at the gym again, all of the Seattle teams appear to have
medaled, Candice's team was out early. One of the sponsors (Susox)
was selling bags & gear pretty cheap, so I bought a new outdoor ball,
a medium sized bag, knee pads & since I had bought a large bag from
him in Houston that ripped, he replaced that one for free too.
The highlights were the AA's where Sam, Brown & Denise were playing
on the same team with Rich, which took the gold in a double final
after working through the losers bracket. The lowlight was that the
organizer forgot to hand out the ballots so the AA/A/B's in the gym
didn't get any all-star awards at all.
- 2/19/00
Spent the day at the gym watching the San Jose tourny, turns out only
3 Seattle teams made the trip, but I did manage to catch up with Guy
(in from NY) and visit a bit. Candice's team played pretty spotty and
ended up with a poor seed (15th out of 17). That night it was dinner
at MoMo's with Kent, Cheryl & Candice -- the food was good, I
especially liked Candice's "short ribs" which were more like short
roast ribs -- very good. Then it was off to Cirque de Soleil --
pretty awesome as always, though this show had much more finesse (as
opposed to the power/props) than previous shows. They had the coolest
Chinese lions (up to 6 of them at a time) running around and playing
on the giant rolling balls. Later it was monster desserts at Max's
before heading home.
- 2/18/00
If I've annoyed you enough with stories about my current
employer, well you better skip this entry then. The day went like
this: Morning all company meeting at Great America (yes, the theme
park) lots of rah-rah and work hard, and the public head shaving of
an engineer who made an ill-advised bet about the current stock price
;) Then they fed us lunch
complete with cotton candy & carmeled apples for dessert. While this
was going on, they had one rollercoaster running (Top Gun) and the
bumper cars. That afternoon I did a phone interview, and after that
(at 4pm) was our weekly beer bust, it was our VP's birthday so there
was cake, and, keeping with techie nerdism at our company, his hair
was publicly painted in rainbow colors by the (newly) bald engineer.
After that it was time for a massage -- it's a hard life when the
company is going well (and you've gotten all of your work done ;)
- 2/17/00
Well, it appears the Journal Ringmaster, might be a bit busy,
so while the next/prev buttons kinda work, if you jump into the
ring itself you won't actually run across my pages (which, in some
sense could be construed as a very good thing).
Since I haven't seen any ants in 2 weeks or so, I've finally removed
the kitty bowls from their moats -- believe me, they're much happier
now.
And finally, due to noisy demands (mostly from Candice & Caroline)
I've added a guestbook (well, dreambook actually) to the main page,
have at it, but remember, I have full editing privs on all of the
entries ;)
- 2/16/00
Back to the old grind, finally finished up
Juliet & Will's
reception pictures. Strange though, while everything looks fine
on my Mac, and the NT box at work, some of the pictures look
strangely dark and grainy on my Linux box. I'm assuming that it's
from the differences in monitors. The fact that I cut the originals
down and tried to 'enhance' them probably made it worse.
Today was Cheryl's birthday, though it won't do much good putting it
here as she doesn't have web access, oh well, maybe Kent will tell
her. Which reminds me, while we were all skiing at Sun Valley, we had
to twist her arm to race the NASTAR course, while not agressively
fast, she turns well enough to make a pretty good time, sometimes
even faster than Kent ;) During the ASIA match race (curved against
the top ASIA skiers as pacesetters) she managed to score the Gold
medal in the Womans Intermediate division.
Next up, the ASIA 2000 Ski Trip to Sun Valley (all 100+ pictures)
- 2/15/00
Ugh, what a way to end a vacation -- after 6 great days of skiing I
come home to a (well fed) set of kittys (thanks to Kat) and no ants,
but a computer that no longer has a DSL connection to the
Internet. After multitudes of phone calls, they finally sent a tech
out this afternoon, only to discover (as I tried to tell them)
that the problem was on the "other end" (I couldn't ping the gateway)
then it takes over an hour to find someone to try and reset
everything before it starts working, but at least it's up now.
Skiing was a blast, Sun Valley had 3 days of sun (and noisy man-made
snow machines) then a 1/2 day of fog with new snow, before the sun
came out in the afternoon, then another really balmy day was finally
followed by a night blizzard, and morning white-out conditions --
great snow if you could brave the lift. It was worth it though cuz
after (an early) lunch, the sun broke out again, and we had mucho
powder in the mogul fields.
I'm still trying to catch up with the number of pictures I've taken
in the past few weeks, I've gotten
Angel's Birthday
pictures up finally, and am working on Juliet's
reception next. After that will be the (100+) pictures from the ski
trip. And boy, are there stories to tell there ;)
You may also notice that there is a new graphic at the bottom of the
page, I decided to join one of The Journal Ring just for fun, go
check them out, you might learn something ;) If you don't know how
a ring works, basically they are circular links for things that are
of common interest. In this case journals, there are other rings for
multitudes of things. For further information, go see
www.webring.org
- 2/4/00
Well the ants appeared to have disappeared again, hopefully they
won't come back while Kat is kitty sitting. Been very busy catching
up at work, and cleaning the house, the pictures from last weekend
will have to wait till I get back from skiing. Speaking of which, I
hope all my gear still fits, will check it tonight, but I'm leaving
tomorrow so it may be the big spending spree at Sun Valley.
- 2/1/00
Ants are back, I think they have a 2 day cycle before they
get hungry again, I hope they gorge themselves on the bait. This time
there was a really strange ant that was about 3x the size of the
others, don't know if it was a drone or scout or something else all
together.
Managed to get all of the pictures from the weekend transferred to my
Mac but still have to cut them down for display, and the flash on the
camera is stronger than I thought, couldn't see the red-eye too well
on the small display but it shows up bigger than life on the pictures
themselves.
I'm still pretty sore, as last night was my basketball league, it's a
men's 30 & over and I'm playing with my brother, teams are much
bigger and it's a small gym, but at least I get a good run in.
