NAGVA Mixed Nuts, Minneapolis MN

Where are we playing next?

Anywhere, we aren't proud ;)
  • Seattle (July 2000, Emerald City Classic ??)
  • San Diego (August 2000 ??)

Just who are these folks anyway??

Founding Members:
  • Ross Erickson (Team Rep, Midwest Regional Commissioner)
  • Daryl Jacobson
  • Steven Yee

Why are we playing out of MN?

Because, Ross is the Regional Commissioner there, and we all have to travel to the tournaments anyway, so we might as well give Ross' region the visibility.

How did we get together?

The founders played in Denver as part of Seattle KDB (Thanks Tj !!) and had such a great time we thought we'd put together a travelling team, the goal is to have fun, increase our skills and be competitive. High marks given for court side laughter ;)

Why does your serve receive look so wierd?

Because as part of our (team) skill work, we're running a 5-1 offense with a 2-person serve receive, turns out, that while less people are passing on serve, more people are getting (fun) sets to hit.

Hey aren't there too many straight guys on our team?

Well, we hope not, if it becomes an issue maybe we'll get our swing hitter to convert ;) But really, we've been trying (and will continue to try) to fill out our team from the NAGVA available players lists, sometimes we just end up in a bind position (or travelling) wise, and the person we know will fit in (straight or otherwise) is usually a better choice than an unknown.

What are those huddle sayings again ?

Things to pep the team up:
  • "Push Hard" (Ross' favorite)
  • "Whatever" (as if, loser, loser, with a twist ;)
  • "Daryl's Straight" (since we couldn't get him a shirt ;)
  • "Sideout"/"One Pass" (usually after the setter has dumped into the net ;)
  • "Daryl's Still Straight" (for the 2nd day of the tourny ;)

Past Tournament Results

  • NAGVA Championships, Denver 5/26/00-5/28/00
    1, 2, BBQ

Finished Friday pool play 5-3, tied for 2nd, Saturday's pool we went 6-2 (again for 2nd) and ended up with the 10th seed out of 40. Waited about 5 hours for our 1st match (around 9pm) to lose in 2 to the 23rd ranked team that we had split with in pool. Sunday we lost again and were out early, really early to a team we probably would have handled easily during pool.

BB Gold, #1 seed out of pool, Daryl All-Star again.

Finished pool play with at 6-2 record, point differential gave us the number one seed, and no reffing duties in the morning (whoo hoo). Tourny day we were living up to our seeding, only to getting pasted badly in the first game of the winners final. We finally won in 3. After a long break, in the finals, we trounced the same team again for the first game and then proceeded to almost give the next game back. We were down 11-4, and ended up winning 25-22 (20?) I think we wore them out since we were getting pretty hyped up in the middle of the match. In addition to taking the gold we ended up 8-1 the second day, 14-3 over 2 days which is pretty good. And, as always, when we medal, Daryl shines and won another All-Star.

It looks like we play well with a Texas member on the team, just not in Texas, we'll have to remember that for next year. This was a pretty fun team, even if I had to be the "team bitch" and scream at a few of them (and we'll be using US signals from now on ;) It looks like we'll try and take the core of this team to Nationals, where, I'm sure:

    • Daryl will attract a lot of attention
    • Ross will try and retake the "team bitch" title (yeah, right)
    • We'll have to keep John ("the drunk"/"cocktail") from drinking at altitude.
    • I'll find a few more interesting quotes

Speaking of quotes, the only ones of note were the continual references to Daryl, "Don't worry Daryl will go down" & "You better back that ass up".

2nd in our pool at 5-3 (took one game off of the evenual champion Diablos), seeded 4th for the tourny we finished middle of the pack, our periods of invincibilty side tracked by (pick any):
    • The Ref
    • Partying
    • Court Rust
    • Texas Jinx
Still it was fun, and funny, no face digs by Javier, but there was the back pass (literally) by Ross, and what? can it be? a jump serve by Steve actually made it over the net ?? (and he didn't fall down either ;) Best line of the tourny was either: "Did you know Daryl juggles?" *smirk* "Balls?" or "Daryl, never offer to barter at a gay tournement!"
